Record #181519:

Uniqueness of Antarctica and potential for commercial success / Roberta L. Farrell, Shona M. Duncan.

Title: Uniqueness of Antarctica and potential for commercial success / Roberta L. Farrell, Shona M. Duncan.
Author(s): Farrell, Roberta L.
Duncan, Shona M.
Date: 2005.
Publisher: Christchurch, NZ: University of Canterbury
In: Antarctic bioprospecting. (2005.),
Abstract: Discusses scientific perspectives of bioprospecting, including definitions of bioprospecting and of unique Antarctic environment; overview of bioprospecting research worldwide and developments in New Zealand; and potential for commercial success. Outlines four stages of bioprospecting as discovery, research and development, manufacturing, and marketing, with only discovery stage taking place in Antarctica, and discusses appropriateness of intellectual property protection at all stages, whether outset was implicitly commercial or outcome of fundamental research. Describes use of either biomass or genes without biomass to provide material for researching targeted biological activities, molecular techniques and DNA analysis, and advantages of prospecting in extreme habitats of Antarctica. Provides examples of bioprospecting successes such as Candida antarctica lipase, and development of glycoprotein from Pseudoalteromonas antarctica; outlines various Antarctica New Zealand research programmes related to biodiversity; and discusses time and cost implications.
