He gives vivid personal accounts of his experiences and responsibilities, among others of setting up literacy classes for both children and adults ("heathen schools", as illiterates were not confirmed, besides not marrying, and children were thus usually illegitimate), meeting with Laestadians, their beliefs, meetings and influence, and importance of level-headed leaders, Laestadius himself and Raattamaa. Other chapters describe social conditions, starting church for miners of "shanty town" Kiruna, population and occupations, starvation year 1902-1903, priests, their wives and vicarages, and nature and climate.
