Abstract: Describes validation of numerical simulation of icebreaker performance in conditions where many ice pieces collide with and scrape against ship's hull. Uses sheet of ice pre-sawn into pieces with certain sizes and shapes and arranged to create channel of 50% ice concentration in 35 m long test basin, through which model icebreaker is towed. Observations were made using three video recorders. Summarises numerical model. Reports colliding behaviour of ice pieces in physical model "appropriate", but that pieces do not submerge so much, staying near water surface. Suggests simulation needs improved treatment of fluid force via fluid solver.
