Abstract: | Presents methodology and results of reconstruction of major glaciological features at high latitudes during Holocene climatic optimum, using examples of contemporary glaciated regions of Novaya Zemlya, Byrranga Range and Orulgan Range. Palaeglaciologic calculations show that ubiquitous rise of equilibrium line altitude (ELA) caused cardinal changes in glaciation. ELA at Northern island of Novaya Zemlya was higher than contemporary one and higher even than both surface of contemporary ice sheet and absolute altitude of bedrock. Estimation of ice mass decrease confirm high probability of disappearance of ice sheet during climatic optimum. This could also have occurred in low-mountainous areas of Byrranga range and northern part of Orulgan range. Discusses possibilities of continuous glacier existence in areas whose highest altitudes exceeded ELA and where increase of solid precipitation and mass exchange promoted more stable existence than at present. |
