Abstract: Describes some biochemical and functional changes characteristic of those working at high altitude, in extreme cold and isolation. Includes adaptations to restore O₂ homeostasis at high altitude; anorexia and energy deficit in Antarctic expeditioners; thyroid function and increase in basic metabolic rate; loss of appetite at high altitude; and mealtimes as opportunities for psychosocial interaction.
