Paleolimnological studies from the Antarctic and Subantarctic islands / Dominic A. Hodgson, Peter T. Doran, Donna Roberts, Andrew McMinn.

Title: Paleolimnological studies from the Antarctic and Subantarctic islands / Dominic A. Hodgson, Peter T. Doran, Donna Roberts, Andrew McMinn.
Author(s): Hodgson, Dominic A.
Doran, Peter T.
Roberts, Donna.
McMinn, Andrew.
Date: 2005.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Springer
In: Long-term environmental change in Arctic and Antarctic lakes. (2005.),
Abstract: Describes physical, chemical and biological features of Antarctic lakes, and logistics of sediment core collection. Discusses chronostratigraphic methods used, including stable isotope analysis; micropaleolimnology; pollen, charcoal and plant macrofossils; diatoms; sedimentary pigments; fossil DNA of protists and cyanobacteria; zoological indicators; and anthropogenic pollutants. Presents case studies involving glacio-hydro-isostasy in Vestfold Hills, Bunger Hills and Antarctic Peninsula; evaluation of risk of destabilization of West Antarctic Ice Sheet and rapid sea-level change; greenhouse gases and southern hemisphere climate; and use of lake sediments from Dry Valleys region to interpret 1,500 yr periodicities in ice cores. Appendix lists stratigraphic paleolimnological studies of Antarctic freshwater lakes organised by region.
