Algal indicators of environmental change in Arctic and Antarctic lakes and ponds / Marianne S.V. Douglas, Paul B. Hamilton, Reinhard Pienitz, John P. Smol.

Title: Algal indicators of environmental change in Arctic and Antarctic lakes and ponds / Marianne S.V. Douglas, Paul B. Hamilton, Reinhard Pienitz, John P. Smol.
Author(s): Douglas, Marianne S. V.
Hamilton, Paul B.
Pienitz, Reinhard.
Smol, John P.
Date: 2005.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Springer
In: Long-term environmental change in Arctic and Antarctic lakes. (2005.),
Abstract: Brief overview of how algal indicators (Bacillariphyceae, Chrysophyceae and Synurophyceae) have been used to track long-term environmental change in Arctic and Antarctic regions summarises some key historical studies on taxonomy, distribution and ecology of algal assemblages from high latitudes. Discusses current approaches and major types of questions that can be addressed using algal remains in paleolimnological studies, including dissolved organic carbon reconstructions at northern treeline; past changes in ultraviolet radiation; climate-related changes in water pH; temperature inferences; past river flows; marine/lacustrine transgressions and sea-levels; acidification and other contaminants; local effects of eutrophication; influences of past fish and wildlife populations on freshwater ecosystems; and in complementing archaeological investigations. Appendix lists polar phycologists and algal collections of historical significance.
