| Abstract: | As part of project Carta dei popoli artici, 28 indigenous groups in Russian Federation were studied, with particular reference to their geographical, historical, demographic, religious and cultural features. They are divided into linguistic families. Outlines their traditional way of life and impact of sedentarisation. Considers effect of Soviet policies on their relationship with nature and socio-cultural relations. Argues that radical measures need to be taken to prevent their extinction. |
