Abstract: Discusses preliminary findings from research into work of evangelical missionaries among Khanty of Surgut region, Khantiy-Mansiyskiy A.O. Defines nature and scale of recent developments in religious life of eastern Khanty. Considers why evangelical missionary activity has met with some success and how conflicts it precipitates make apparent divisions in community. Suggests lines of further research to integrate work of ethnographers exploring similar phenomena in Siberia. Argues that rapid change, brought about by intensive petroleum development together with collapse of Soviet structures, has provided opportunities for new ideologies.
