| Abstract: | Outlines discovery of Limnoria lignorum (gribble or wood-borer) in 1922 by I.G. Zaks in timbers of expedition vessel Murman. At the time, this was most northernly finding of species. Describes its location since 1922 in White Sea area bsed on examination of driftwood and other timber. In 2000 it was found to have colonised area 7 km from its first appearance in 1922. Highlights benefits to ecosystem provided by Limnoria which was for long time considered to be detrimental to wooden structures. |
