Abstract: Reports results of laboratory study of interactive effects of rapid warming and loss of flagellate species diversity on productivity and nitrogen concentrations in model Antarctic microbial food webs, using microbes isolated from freshwater Sombre Lake on Signey Island, South Orkney Islands. There were significant interactive effects of flagellate species loss and warming on abundance of bacterial prey and concentration of ammonium in medium. Data from separate experiment showed that logarithmic growth rates of Bodo saltans and Spongomonas uvella were highest of each of six flagellate species used, and as both these species were absent from randomly selected two-species mixtures, results indicate that random species loss from food webs or communities is likely to alter their responses to environmental change, largely owing to interspecific differences in responses to change.
