Abstract: | Examines involvement of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in Antarctic bioprospecting, drawing primarily on interviews with industry representatives and academics, and records found in publicly available patent databases. Results indicate that lack of ownership and samples and uncertainty relating to intellectual property rights and commercial exploitation have acted as disincentives for commercial development of products or processes based on Antarctic organisms. |
