Abstract: Examines limiting effect of low soil phosphorus (P) on vegetation responses to increased nitrogen (N) inputs at high latitudes. Finds that if soil N and P availabilities increase sufficiently at soil surface in polar semi-desert sites, areas of bare ground could be colonised by Bryum arcticum, by increased cover of Saxifraga oppositifolia and S.polaris and by immigrant angiosperm seedlings.
