Abstract: History of establishment of scientific research station on Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands, during Bruce's 1902-04 expedition, and subsequent operation by Argentina as first all-year-round permanently-staffed research facility in Antarctica. Includes rivalry between Scottish and British interests; visit of Scotia to Buenos Aires from December 1903 to January 1904; establishment of first post office in Antarctic by Argentine Hugo Acuña in 1904 after failure of British government to sanction Bruce's proposal to claim islands for Great Britain; and continuing Scottish involvement in staffing of meteorological station on Laurie Island.
