Applying principal components analysis (PCA) for separating wingless birch fruits - a palaeoecological case study from northern Norway / Minna Väliranta, Jan Weckström.

Title: Applying principal components analysis (PCA) for separating wingless birch fruits - a palaeoecological case study from northern Norway / Minna Väliranta, Jan Weckström.
Author(s): Väliranta, Minna.
Weckström, Jan.
Date: 2007.
In: Annales Botanici Fennici. (2007.), Vol. 44(3) (2007)
Abstract: Reports use of principal components analysis (PCA) to distinguish wingless birch fruit bodies of different birch (Betula) species. Measures seven dimension variables from modern fruit selection and analyses explanatory power using PCA. Includes subfossil birch fruits in PCA as passive variables and compares result with data gathered by visual analysis. Finds that PCA clearly separates modern fruits of Betula species, and provides effective and objective tool for producing detailed palaeoecological data.
