Record #180235:

To remember and restore the Argentine rescuers of the Nordenskjöld expedition 1901-1903 / Lisbeth Lewander.

Title: To remember and restore the Argentine rescuers of the Nordenskjöld expedition 1901-1903 / Lisbeth Lewander.
Author(s): Lewander, Lisbeth.
Date: 2007.
Publisher: London: Taylor and Francis
In: Antarctic Peninsula and Tierra del Fuego : 100 years of Swedish-Argentine scientific cooperation at the end of the world. Proceedings of "Otto Nordenskjöld's Antarctic expedition of 1901-1903 and Swedish scientists in Patagonia: a symposium", held in Buenos Aires, La Plata and Ushuaia, Argentina, March 2-7, 2003. (2007.),
Abstract: Examines private correspondence in 1940s between Argentine member of Nordenskjöld's 1901-03 Antarctic expedition José Maria Sobral and Swedish professor Erik Ljungner in relation to personal accounts of expedition published by Andersson in 1930s and 1940s, with particular reference to roles of Larsen and Irizar when rescue vessel Uruguay sent by Argentina ran aground; discovery and naming of Larsen Ice Shelf; and attitude of Swedish members of expedition towards Sobral and Argentine crew of Uruguay. Suggests that most research has been based on official published sources and popular accounts, and that further examination of primary sources for this expedition may require change in traditional historiography.
