Post-den emergence behavior of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in northern Alaska / Tom S. Smith, Steven T. Partridge, Steven C. Amstrup, Scott Schliebe.

Title: Post-den emergence behavior of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in northern Alaska / Tom S. Smith, Steven T. Partridge, Steven C. Amstrup, Scott Schliebe.
Author(s): Smith, Tom S.
Partridge, Steven T.
Amstrup, Steven C.
Schliebe, Scott.
Date: 2007.
In: Arctic. (2007.), Vol. 60(2) (2007)
Abstract: Investigates post-den emergence behaviour of 8 adult polar bears (Ursus maritimus) and 14 dependent cubs. Finds that bears remain at den sites for 1.5 to 14 days following initial den breakout. Observes average length of stay at dens between emergent periods to be significantly shorter in 2002 than in 2003. While outside, adult bears are inactive 49.5% of time, whereas cubs are inactive 13.4% of time. Finds no relationship between den emergence activity and weather.
