| Abstract: | Studies role of horse in culture and worldview of Yakuty (Sakha). Explores domestication of horse and origin of shamanism among Yakuty. Describes ritual of Kyydaa (horse liberation), Analyses marriage and hierarchy in Yakut society and discusses what Olonkho epic poetry reveals about Yakut view of horse. Considers horse as part of diet as well as its cultural significance. Notes survival of serge (tethering post) which remains as cultural symbol long after use of horse has disappeared. |
