Eco-hydrology: new opportunities for research on glacier-fed rivers / Geoff E. Petts, Angela M. Gurnell, Alexander M. Milner.

Title: Eco-hydrology: new opportunities for research on glacier-fed rivers / Geoff E. Petts, Angela M. Gurnell, Alexander M. Milner.
Author(s): Petts, Geoff E.
Gurnell, Angela M.
Milner, Alexander M.
Date: 2006.
Publisher: Saskatoon: National Water Research Institute
In: Peyto Glacier : one century of science. (2006.),
Abstract: Reviews ecological characteristics of glacier-fed rivers, examines some features of hydro-geomorphological disturbances, and raises questions for future research. Presents examples from Swiss Alps to illustrate how short-term studies, especially of comparative nature, can advance understanding of functional role of physical processes in stream ecosystems. Examines glacial outputs, e.g., annual, seasonal and diurnal variations in discharge, suspended sediment and bedload transport, electrical conductivity and water temperature, and channel instability. Argues for complementary long-term and experimental catchment studies, suggesting Mistaya River basin as candidate to benefit from research programme on Peyto Glacier.
