Abstract: Describes attempts to link weather variation at Peyto Glacier with mass balance fluctuations. Outlines history of weather observation at glacier and examines effects of regional climate. Uses field data to examine surface energy exchange, including glacier atmospheric environment, measurement and calculation of heat transfer components, energy components of melting ice and snow, and glacier cooling effect. Describes conversion of melt energy data into ablation estimates. Discusses diagnostic and operational modelling of glacier response to weather, including meltwater production and snowpack development. Concludes micro-meteorological investigations at Peyto Glacier provide firm basis for understanding energetics of ablation phase of mass balance cycle, and guidance for accumulation phase.
