Palaeogeographic reconstruction of proglacial lakes in Estonia / Alar Rosentau, Jüri Vassiljev, Leili Saarse, Avo Miidel.
Title: | Palaeogeographic reconstruction of proglacial lakes in Estonia / Alar Rosentau, Jüri Vassiljev, Leili Saarse, Avo Miidel. |
Author(s): | Rosentau, Alar. Vassiljev, Jüri. Saarse, Leili. Miidel, Avo. |
Date: | 2007. |
In: | Boreas. (2007.), Vol. 36(2) (2007) |
Abstract: | Describes GIS-based reconstruction of development of proglacial lakes during deglaciation in Estonia and examines their common features and relations with Baltic Ice Lake. Uses ice marginal positions, interpolated proglacial lake water levels and digital terrain model to reconstruct spatial distribution and bathymetry of lakes. Results suggest lakes formed bay of Baltic Ice Lake after halt at Pandivere-Neva ice margin about 13.3 cal. kyr BP. Reconstructed shorelines show two major proglacial lake systems connected via a strait able to transfer large water volume. Subsequent further margin in north Estonia did not, therefore, result in catastrophic drainage proposed. |
