Reconstructs main stages of development of soil temperature monitoring in Russia from mid-19th century to present, resulting in secular observations of response of one sixth of Earth's surface to air temperature fluctuations unique on global scale. Discusses resulting archive, data quality and soil temperature database, and presents maps of developing network from 1900 to 1990.
