Abstract: Notes difficulty of evaluating safety of adfreeze along curved interface between frozen soil and structure. Describes adreeze shear tests performed between frozen sand and a steel pipe with curved interface. Identifies three modes of adfreeze shear failure depending of adfreeze position and thickness of frozen sand within interface: adfreeze shear failure occurs over entire area of interface; adfreeze shear failure occurs in partial area of interface; shear failure of frozen sand occurs in entire area without adfreeze shear failure. Proposes judgement equation for adfreeze failure based on stress analysis and validates equation by comparing analytical results for failure load, area and mode with experiment.
