Abstract: Reports discussions at meeting held in Ulsan, Korea, 27-28 May 2005. Summarises present state of knowledge on use of genetic methods to identify market products to species and correct for multiple samples from same individual, and reviews methods used in previous food market sampling studies designed to elucidate market structure. Evaluates possible use of Japanese Annual Statistics of Fisheries Product Markets, and describes likely pathways from source to consumer for bycaught whales on Japanese and Korean markets. Discusses analytical techniques for market surveys with particular reference to sources of negative bias.
