| Abstract: | Examines whether strengthening greenhouse effect will mean end for Alpine glaciers, and what role Man is playing in process. Summarise changes in Alpine glaciers including halving of total area since highpoint of 1850, increase in snowline elevations by 150 m in last 22 years, and dramatic terminus retreats. Sees no prospect of trend reversing. Summarises climate trends and predictions and human role. Illustrations include photographs from 1898, 1992 and 2005, showing retreat of Vernagtferner (Ötztaler Alpen) |
