Dynamics of the Late Weichselian ice sheet on Svalbard inferred from high-resolution sea-floor morphology / Dag Ottesen, Julian A. Dowdeswell, Jon Y. Landvik, Juergen Mienert.
Title: | Dynamics of the Late Weichselian ice sheet on Svalbard inferred from high-resolution sea-floor morphology / Dag Ottesen, Julian A. Dowdeswell, Jon Y. Landvik, Juergen Mienert. |

Abstract: | Uses new high-resolution bathymetric data from fjords and continental areas around Svalbard to reconstruct flow direction and dynamics of last (Late Weichselian) Svalbard Ice Sheet. Presents examples of submarine landforms identified, including mega-scale glacial lineations, lateral moraines, transverse ridges and glaciotectonic features superimposed on large-scale fjord, shelf and cross-shelf trough morphology of margin. Infers several major fjords as routes for fast-flowing palaeo-ice streams and maps their lateral moraines for several tens of kilometres. Concludes large ice sheet reached shelf edge around almost all of western and northern Svalbard. Ice sheet appears to have retreated more rapidly from cross-shelf troughs and outer fjords than from intervening shallower banks. |
