Abstract: | Reports testing of algorithm to determine phase change of soil moisture using ground surface temperature as upper boundary condition and conduction to transfer heat to freeze-thaw front. Test is conducted on permafrost site near Wrigley, NWT, where computed thaw penetration compares satisfactorrily with field data. Also conducts ground-thaw simulation experiments on three sites in Mackenzie valley. Results of simulation demonstrate sensitivity of active layer thaw to soil materials, moisture content, and inter-annual variations in ground surface temperature. |
