Динамические фазы и циклы развития ледника Колка = Dynamic phases and cycles of the glacier Kolka development

Title: Динамические фазы и циклы развития ледника Колка = Dynamic phases and cycles of the glacier Kolka development
Title, transliterated: Dinamicheskie fazy i t︠s︡ikly razvitii︠a︡ lednika Kolka = Dynamic phases and cycles of the glacier Kolka development / M.G. Berger.
Author(s): Berger, M. G.
Date: 2006.
Publisher: Vladikavkaz: Olimp
Language: Russian and English.
In: Preduprezhdenie opasnykh situat︠s︡iĭ v vysokogornykh raĭonakh. Doklady mezhdunarodnoĭ konferent︠s︡ii Vladikavkaz-Moskva, 23-26 Ii︠u︡ni︠a︡ 2004 g. = Proceedings of the International Conference on High Mountain Hazard Prevention, Vladikavkaz-Moscow, June 23-26, 2006. (2006.),
Abstract: Presents unconventional view that gas-dynamic outburst may have played important, if not decisive, role in Kolka glacier catastrophes. Analyses historical information to show glacier periodically passes through same typical conditions and presents sequence culminating in paroxysmal glacier surges of 1752, 1902 and 2002. Argues long-term glacier development is result of superposition of two cycles; a classical surging glacier process, and a gas-dynamic process, with durations 67-82 years and 100-150 years, respectively. Compares proposed scheme with those in which gas-dynamic cycle is absent. Discusses relationship between cycles and reason for shortening of gas-dynamic cycle.
