Les glaciers à l'épreuve du climat / Bernard Francou, Christian Vincent.
Title: | Les glaciers à l'épreuve du climat / Bernard Francou, Christian Vincent. |
Translated title: | Glaciers to the climate test. |
Author(s): | Francou, Bernard. Vincent, Christian. |
Date: | 2007. |
Publisher: | Paris: IRD Editions : |
Language: | French. |
Abstract: | Presents broad, comprehensive and well illustrated review of state of world's mountain glaciers, covering their history and prehistory, role in climate system, dynamics, mass balance, and prospects. Examines major evolutions of past; Little Ice Age (LIA) advances and causes; post-LIA and 20th century retreat. Discusses evolution of entire cryosphere (mountain glaciers, sea ice, seasonal snow and polar ice sheets) since 1960s. Examines 21st century as seen through models, covering possible climate change and its causes, sensitivity of glaciers to change, likely responses and consequences of retreat (sea level rise, glacial lake outbursts, etc.). Examples come from Alps, Rockies, Himalayas, tropical Africa and South America, Patagonia, Alaska, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Antarctica etc. |
