Abstract: | Reconsiders nature of frontal structure of Southern Ocean with particular reference to hydrographic data suggesting that Antarctic circumpolar current (ACC) consists of three fronts with complete circumpolar paths, whereas high-resolution models and satellite observations show that ACC consists of larger number of multiple jets or discontinuous frontal filaments. Recognition of multiple branches of Southern Ocean fronts helps to reconcile differences between front locations determined by previous studies. Twelve-year series of weekly maps of sea surface height are used to characterise structure and variability of ACC fronts and filaments in Australian sector of Southern Ocean. Path, width and intensity of frontal branches are strongly influenced by bathymetry. Meander envelopes of fronts are narrow on northern slopes of topographic ridges where sloping topography reinforces Β effect, and broader over abyssal plains. |
