520 3# ‡aUses eddy-resolving global ocean model to illustrate eddy transport mechanisms for temperature and salinity in Southern Ocean, and discusses advective and diffusive transport mechanisms and ways in which eddy advection and eddy diffusion can reinforce each other for some tracers but oppose each other for other tracers. Uses scaling analysis to argue that relative directions of eddy advective and diffusive transports can be determined simply from relative slopes of tracers and isopycnals. Discusses applications to other tracers such as oxygen. Diagnosed eddy diffusivity for temperature and salinity is found to be considerably different from eddy diffusivity for eddy advective transport velocity.
