Record #179940:

Identification of frequency changes in synoptic circulation types and consequences for glacier mass balance in Norway / Rowan Fealy, John Sweeney.

Title: Identification of frequency changes in synoptic circulation types and consequences for glacier mass balance in Norway / Rowan Fealy, John Sweeney.
Author(s): Fealy, Rowan.
Sweeney, John.
Date: 2007.
In: Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift. (2007.), Vol. 61(2) (2007)
Abstract: Seeks to improve understanding of linkages between synoptic climate and glacier mass balance and establish mechanisms causing positive net balances on Norwegian maritime glaciers during period 1963-2000. Presents synoptic typing methodology, concerned with type and frequencies of atmospheric circulation, to derive Temporal Synoptic Index for 30-year period from Norwegian meteorological data. Finds "warm" type air masses during summer occur more frequently, particularly since late 1980s. "Cold" cluster types during winter became less frequent after this, and "warm" types with increased moisture capacity more frequent. Shows changes significantly related to glacier mass balance during both accumulation and ablation seasons.
