Abstract: Assesses glacier retreat in Suntar-Khayata (S-K) and Cherskiy mountain systems of north-eastern Siberia using Landsat imagery from 2001 and 2003 and USSR Glacier Inventory from 1970s. Estimates glacier length, area and distance from current terminus to front of terminal moraine and analyses glacier shape changes resulting in disintegration and conjunction of individual flows. Analyses areal reductions based on glacier morphology and climatic factors. Average area of S-K glaciers has decreased from 0.9 to 0.45 km², with largest loss characteristic of compound-valley glaciers of various exposures. Valley and compound-valley glaciers of Cherskiy range have lost from 0.84 to almost 2 km². Glaciers of S-K range have shortened by 19% since 1945 and those of Cherskiy range by 28% since 1970.
