Title, transliterated: Gidrologo-gidrokhimicheskai︠a︡ kharakteristika vodnykh obʺektov vysokogoriĭ basseĭna r. Katuni (Gornyĭ Altaĭ) na poroge XXI veka / V.A. Semenov, T.V. Bolʹbukh, I.V. Semenova.
Translated title: Hydrological and hydrochemical characteristics of water bodies in high mountains of Katun' river basin (Altai Mountains) on the eve of the 21st century.
Author(s): Semenov, V. A.
Bolʹbukh, T. V.
Semenova, I. V.
Date: 2006.
Language: Russian.
In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2006.), Vol. 101 (2006)
Abstract: Presents measurements of pH, hardness, major ions, etc. from river, stream and lake sites during years 2000-04. Discusses results and underlying processes, concluding climate variability has had negative impact on river runoff annual variation and caused inter-annual redistribution with increase in low water periods. Although low mineralization is typical of high mountains, finds combination of increased acidity of melt water and rock solubility results in rapid increase of river water mineralization even in periglacial zone. Finds acidity in high mountain lakes increased over 70-year period along with other water chemistry changes. Earthquakes result in formation of new water sources with high degree of mineralization.
