| Abstract: | Examines fluctuations of mean summer temperature over second half of Holocene, based on studies of moraine complexes and forest boundary dynamics, and experimental data from mountain-glacier valley of Aktru basin (Altai, Severo-Chuisky range). Finds Holocene climatic optimum 6000 years ago saw mean temperatures 1.5-1.8\degC higher than today, with subsequent minimum (4000 years ago) 0.8-1.0°C lower than today. Divides historical stage (3500-2000 years ago) into earlier colder and later warmer stage. Identifies glacier advances approximately 1500 years ago, in 11th-12th centuries and in Little Ice Age (Fernau stage in Alpine chronology), in synchrony with Alpine glaciers. |
