Aims to detect climatic signal limiting tree growth and use partial dependence of both tree growth and glacier mass balance on same climatic parameters to reconstruct mass balance components. Describes correlations between ring width and seasonal precipitation and temperature, and their long-term stability. Correlations between ring width and ablation (negative) and accumulation (positive) on Karabtkak and Tuyuksy glaciers support method. Argues chronologies can also be used for high precision dating of avalanches, mud flows, landslides, etc.
