Abstract: Argues that seasonal Arctic sea ice cover acts as impermeable membrane preventing gaseous exchange between atmosphere and ocean and that effect of this has not been fully accounted for in modeling of polar meteorology and global climate. Discusses correlation between seasonal variability of atmospheric CO₂ and sea ice extent and causes of this. Argues enhancement of "greenhouse effect" resulting from atmospheric CO₂ content north of 60°N being 6% greater in winter than in summer partly compensates for heat losses relating to seasonal cycle of incoming solar radiation, increase of surface mean albedo and decrease in atmospheric water vapour content.
