Record #179876:
The rumen in winter: cold shocks in naturally feeding muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) / Annie R. Crater, Perry S. Barboza.
Title: | The rumen in winter: cold shocks in naturally feeding muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) / Annie R. Crater, Perry S. Barboza. |
Author(s): | Crater, Annie R. Barboza, Perry S. |
Date: | 2007. |
In: | Journal of Mammalogy. (2007.), Vol. 88(3) (2007) |
Abstract: | Reports correlation between changes in ambient temperature and water flux, ingestive behaviour, rumen temperature and bacterial counts in castrated adult muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) fed with consistent diet in winter. Finds that ambient temperatures decline to -40°C but average ruminal temperatures are +39°C in muskoxen fed grass hay throughout winter; also that rumen temperatures are not static, but punctuated by cold shocks to +26°C in each month. Water turnover rates are high in October and low in January and March. |
