Abstract: Applies three indices (visible(red)band, Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) and newly proposed S3 index, using visible, near-infrared and shortwave-infrared reflectances) to identify snow-covered areas in Landsat-7/ETM+ images of Niigata prefecture, Japan. Compares with in situ ground data based on synchronous observations to evaluate indices. Reports S3 more useful than NDSI because it distinguishes snow-covered areas from mixels of snow and vegetation without reference data, whereas NDSI requires reference to Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)
