| Abstract: | Observations reveal significant year-on-year and long-term variations in extent of Arctic sea ice. Analysis of variations leads to identification of four stages in sea ice development over last century: two stages of growth (1900-18 and 1938-68) and two periods of decrease (1918-38 and 1968-96) expressed against background of long-term reduction in ice area. There has been ice area decrease of 610,000 km² compared to 1970s and also thinning. Briefly outlines impact on navigation along Northern Sea Route. |
