Abstract: | Lena 2005 Expedition focused on four main areas of study: permafrost soils and ecosystems; periglacial landscape dynamics; ground ice as climate archive; modern delta hydrology. First study investigates microbiological processes, trace gas fluxes and hydrobiology in permafrost ecosystems of Lena Delta. Assesses how warming of Russian tundra could alter methane fluxes by altering methanotrophic community. Examines adaptation, phylogeny and dynamic of methane oxidising community concentrations of gas of water column and sediments in Samoylov Island. Studies periglacial landscape dynamics and surface characteristics of western Lena Delta. Second study focuses on permafrost sequences in sediment cores and exposures for palaeo-environmental construction, and characteristics of thermokarst-affected landscape. Third research group studies Holocene sedimentological and cryolithological history of Delta. Uses isotopic composition of ground ice as palaeo-climate indicator. Fourth study reports hydrological measurements on main channels of Lena river delta. |
