Abstract: Uses data from long-term ecological research site in Taylor Valley, Antarctica, to examine current structure and function of dry valleys ecosystem in relation to changes over past 27,000 years, and highlight importance of past climatic conditions on current ecosystem functioning. Relatively large past variations in climate were found to have concentrated nutrients that cannot be attained under normal or static conditions, and nutrient-poor, energy-limited environment of dry valleys means these concentrations play major role in current ecosystem structure and function. Though ecosystems within dry valleys are poorly linked with soils and lakes appearing to behave completely independently, understanding of past changes shows importance of their linkage across time.
