Abstract: | Considers which types of El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) or other multi-year climate variations might be observed at McMurdo Dry Valleys Long-Term Ecological Research (MCM) site, and their impact on ecosystem of dry valleys, focusing on transport and chemistry of water as primary factors controlling habitat characteristics of streams and lakes. Includes meteorological data in relation to stream discharge; streamflow variability and ENSO; climate variability and hydrologic cycle within McMurdo Dry Valleys. Discusses impact on stream, lake and soil ecosystems with particular reference to effect of differing flow rates on algal communities, effect of low streamflows on major ion chemistry of Lake Hoare, and effect of short-term climate variations on soil nematodes. |
