Abstract: Discusses distribution of copepods in relation to oceanographic fronts and retreat of sea ice in Australian sector of Southern Ocean, using data obtained in March 2002. Disparities of distribution between areas south and north of Southern Boundary (SB) were found for nine out of 15 species, and these were attributed to difference of 2°C in sea surface temperature, driven by SB. Earlier copepodite stages of Calanoides acutus, Calanus propinquus and Rhincalanus gigas were observed at higher latitudes, and this trend was considered to be result of sea ice retreat, which caused later spawning period for Copepoda. Results also suggested interaction between sea ice conditions and community structure of copepods along 140°E.
