Abstract: Surface seawater monitoring system aboard Shirase capable of recording water temperature, salinity and phytoplankton abundance was used to detect temporal variations in phytoplanton abundance under fast ice in Lützow-Holm Bay during austral summer 1996-97. High Chl a values were measured in relatively warm and less saline water, suggesting that high Chl a may be derived from ice-edge phytoplankton blooms that develop in stable waters associated with melting ice. Observations showed rapid and frequent fluctuations in Chl a sometimes occurring within 24 hours and unlikely to be detected by conventional field observations.
