520 3# ‡aPresents data on abundance and species composition of surface water diatom assemblages in Indian sector of Southern Ocean during austral summer 1999-2000. On westward leg in December 1999, abundance was geographically uniform, and species composition varied in geographical mosaic, with dominant species pennate Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and centric Dactyliosolen tenuijunctus, Chaetoceros sp.cf. dichaeta and Chaetoceros neglectus. On eastward leg in February and March 2000, community to west of 60°E was large in abundance and dominated by D. tenuijunctus, while that to east was small and dominated by pennate Fragilariopsis species. These diatom assemblages were grouped into four clusters on westward leg with mosaic distribution, and three clusters on eastward leg with simple east-west difference. Geographical variations seem to be affected by local sea ice dynamics.
