Record #179664:
Southern giant petrels Macronectes giganteus diving on submerged carrion / John Van Den Hoff, Kym Newbery.
Title: | Southern giant petrels Macronectes giganteus diving on submerged carrion / John Van Den Hoff, Kym Newbery. |
Author(s): | Hoff, John Van Den. Newbery, Kym. |
Date: | 2006. |
In: | Marine Ornithology. (2006.), Vol. 34(1) (2006) |
Abstract: | Describes southern giant petrels pursuit diving on submerged Weddell seal carcass in shallow waters off Béchervaise Island, Mac. Robertson Land, Antarctica in January 2005. Floating oily slick produced by decomposing carcass was olfactory cue used by birds to rediscover carcass after it had become submerged in about three metres of water. Observations suggest that foraging habitat of southern giant petrels may be broader than previously thought, especially in shallow-water coastal regions. |
