Record #179626:

On the current location of the Byrd "Snow Cruiser" and other artefacts from Little America I, II, III and Framheim / Ted Scambos, Clarence Novak.

Title: On the current location of the Byrd "Snow Cruiser" and other artefacts from Little America I, II, III and Framheim / Ted Scambos, Clarence Novak.
Author(s): Scambos, Ted.
Novak, Clarence.
Date: 2005.
In: Polar Geography. (2005.), Vol. 29(4) (2005)
Abstract: Presents analysis of maps, sightings, satellite images and aerial photographs indicating that section of eastern side of Bay of Whales on Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, calved around late 1961, taking with it buried remains of bases from Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration. Westward drift of icebergs in Ross Sea implies that artefacts are strewn along seabed near 1962 ice-front position. Major calvings of 2000 and 2002 mean that 1962 ice front area are ice free, making search for these artefacts technically more feasible until shelf ice flow re-covers the area.
