Abstract: Antarctic intermediate water (AAIW) is formed in Southern Ocean, characterized by relative salinity minimum, and occupies intermediate horizon of most of world oceans. Reanalysis of export characteristics of AAIW from Southern Ocean into South Pacific Ocean using new dataset shows that part of AAIW is exported from sub-polar frontal region by large-scale circulation through exchange window of 10° width situated east of 90° W in southeast corner of Pacific basin, suggesting that origin of this water is in Antarctic circumpolar current. Observed features are reproduced using set of numerical modelling experiments, demonstrating that dynamics of exchange window are controlled by basin-scale meridional pressure gradient. Exchange of AAIW between Southern and Pacific Oceans must therefore be understood in context of large basin-scale dynamical balance rather than simply local effects.
