Biogeographic characterisation of blue whale song worldwide: using song to identify populations / Mark A. McDonald, Sarah L. Mesnick, John A. Hildebrand.

Title: Biogeographic characterisation of blue whale song worldwide: using song to identify populations / Mark A. McDonald, Sarah L. Mesnick, John A. Hildebrand.
Author(s): McDonald, Mark A.
Mesnick, Sarah L.
Hildebrand, John A.
Date: 2006.
In: Journal of Cetacean Research and Management. (2006.), Vol. 8(1) (2006)
Abstract: Reports on characteristics, geographic range and seasonality of blue whale songs worldwide, and describes nine distinctive regional types of songs, which are produced with stereotyped character in distinct geographic regions with distinct oceanographic characteristics. Suggests that temporally stable differences in song provide another characteristic for comparison with genetic and morphological data when defining blue whale populations.
